Glutathione
Glutathione in the Basement. Glutathione can strengthen the immune system and therefore helps prevent chronic diseases.
Glutathione is a combination of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It's known as the 'master antioxidant' – and for good reason! It is the body's natural 'detoxifier' that occurs naturally in the liver and works to clear toxins from the body. Glutathione is essential for almost all bodily functions and is found in most cells in the body.
Glutathione production unfortunately declines with age. This is one reason age spots are common as we age. This decline in production is exacerbated by a high-stress lifestyle, poor dietary habits or poor quality food, excess toxins such as smoking, alcohol or environmental pollutants, and insufficient sleep, among other causes.
When you don't have enough in your body, it can suffer oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Many chronic health conditions are associated with low glutathione levels, including autoimmune diseases and heart disease.
Glutathione has many possible benefits, including:
- Improves the appearance of the skin (including dark spots, freckles, uneven skin tone, blemishes, liver spots and signs of aging).
- It reduces hyperpigmentation by reversing the dark melanin pigments in the skin.
- Improves pigmentation on sun-damaged skin.
- It helps to strengthen the immune function.
- It breaks down free radicals formed during exposure to hot and cold ambient temperatures, toxicity and UV rays from the sun. Additional sources of free radicals include exhaust fumes and pollutants for those in the City and recirculated air for those who travel a lot by train or plane.
- It supports cell regeneration, including tissue formation, cell growth and wound healing.
- Helps detoxify heavy metals.
- It prevents oxidative cell damage.
- It is a very powerful detox agent that can help reduce cell damage in the liver and counter the toxic effects of many drugs, malnutrition and disease (chronic or acute).
Low glutathione levels are linked to a number of mental disorders. Because it helps neutralize free radicals, low levels of glutathione are associated with chronic inflammation and cellular damage. As a result, many people suffer from depression and other mental illnesses. Also, the antioxidant effects of low glutathione are detrimental to our health. This can lead to depression and other serious ailments.
If you suspect your glutathione levels are too low, your doctor will order an RBC Glutathione test to measure your total and decreased levels. An RBC Glutathione test is the best way to detect a low glutathione level. In addition to a simple blood test, a medical professional may also perform a more comprehensive analysis that measures total and reduced levels.
Since vitamin C naturally increases the production of glutathione, taking vitamin C and glutathione IV therapy at the same time is effective.
